Heavenly Tasty Organics

At the start of the week I was asked to work at the Boots Baby Event in The Liffey Valley Shopping Centre. It was a great event with loads of brands in attendance offering samples and information on ‘all things baby’ for parents, and parents-to-be.

A baby food company Heavenly Tasty Organics caught my eye while I was looking through the stands. As Ellie is only over a week shy of hitting the 6 month mark (eh…scary!!!) I am very keen to see what is on offer in terms of foods available to wean onto.

I am very fussy when it comes to the food I want Ellie to be eating. According to The Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) 1 in 5 children are overweight or obese. Minister for Health, Simon Harris has stated that:

“Only 40% of us have a healthy weight”  and that “levels of overweight and obesity in Ireland have doubled” (A Healthy Weight for Ireland: Obesity Policy and Action Plan 2016-2025)

I find the above figures quite frightening and I am determined that Ellie will grow up to enjoy a healthy, varied and balanced diet. I do not want her to  become a part of these growing figures.

I am a firm believer that when it comes to cooking, you’re best off cooking from scratch yourself, as you know exactly what is going into it. I feel the same when I think of baby food. I have been trialing Ellie with my own homemade spoon feeds over the past few weeks. I opted to start this weaning process slightly early, due to Ellie’s reflux, and my own personal judgment for what was best for her. Normal national guidelines do not recommend starting the weaning process until after 6 months.

I decided to stay away from most “traditional” foods that babies’ have been weaned onto for the past few decades i.e Baby Rice. For me, I just can’t see how a powder reconstituted with water/milk could have better micro-nutrient value over homemade vegetables and fruit made by myself.  I am in no way bashing parents that opt to introduce foods in alternative ways to mine, this is just my personal opinion.

In saying that, cooking my own food for Ellie can be very time consuming. I often ‘batch cook’ to save time during the week, but even at that, by the time everything is done from start to finish (including the dreaded clean up!) it takes well over an hour.

So, long story short, when I got talking to Chris the representative from Heavenly Tasty Organics I was totally taken with the brand’s ethos of delivering healthy, organic, low sugar foods.

The company’s founder Shauna McCarney-Blair has similar views as myself that making her own food from scratch was of huge importance when she decided to wean her first child

“Like all new Mums I wanted to provide the best for my baby, so I tried to make all my own fresh organic baby food from scratch” (heavenlytasty.com)

The brand really appealed to me. If you look at the “Our Team” section on the website, majority of the staff have children of their own. I personally feel more trusting of a brand that show who is working in the background, and that gives a quick bio about them. It is nice to see that many of the staff have children of their own, as they will obviously be as passionate about providing their own kids with healthy food.

At the end of the Baby Event, Chris kindly gave me a few samples to try with Ellie.

The range is suited for babies’ from 6 months+ so I trialed Ellie with the Coconut Squishes and the Yummy Wafer Wisps. I took the liberty of testing out the other products for older babies’ (hey, I’m a big child myself!).

To say that Ellie and myself were impressed is an understatement! I firstly loved that the Coconut Squishes are Dairy Free and contain Coconut Milk. As I suffer with Eczema (that is exacerbated by dairy products) I am very wary of potential allergies with Ellie. I also love that the Coconut Milk added some fat macro-nutrient component to the Squishes, as many other fruit blend pouches on the market for babies lack any fat , which often means a higher sugar content as a result. I think having healthy fats in baby food is really important for skin and hormone health.

Ellie really enjoyed munching on the Spinach Apple and Kale Yummy Wafer Wisps, which dissolved in her mouth as she is yet to cut a tooth. As she is in the middle of teething she got great relief from chewing away on them.

I myself really enjoyed the Crispy Veggie Waffles …..the Sweet Beet and Shallot ones were so good I demolished the whole box over the course of a day! Similarly the the Happy Halo Bites were really tasty, without any over powering flavours.

Overall I really would rate this brand. If you look at the ingredients and nutritional value on the products you can tell that it is of super quality. I still plan on preparing as much food myself for Ellie, but the products from this brand will certainly be my ‘PLAN B!” for when I am stuck on time, or out and about!
